Color: Body in life usually dusky yellow or green above and silvery below.

Distinguished by having six (occasionally five or seven) pectoral filaments, not reaching midpoint of anal fin; depth of posterior margin of maxilla less than eye diameter; snout pointed. Dorsal soft rays (total): 11 - 13; Anal soft rays: 10 - 12.
