Color: Body and head sandy to light olive above, Back light brown, lower ventral flanks and belly white, without dark blotches. First dorsal fin pale with a dark tip and scattered dark irregular blotches, second dorsal fin pale with 5 to 7 rows of blackish spots; other fins pale, yellowish or white, the caudal sometimes with the lower lobe dark. Eye with a silver iris, somewhat golden on the outer surface. Sides of the body without a well defined silvery lateral stripe.

Body elongate with a small mouth located terminally. Snout pointed; upper head profile slightly convex; villiform teeth present in jaws and on vomer (roof of mouth). Scales are small and cycloid. Lateral line has nearly 70 scales. Its airbladder is a single postcoelomic extension. The margin of scales is darker with silvery sides with a golden tinge. Swim bladder with a single posterior extension, a short bulbous projection anteriorly with one to three anterolobate or recurved projections; no tubular extensions anteriorly. Growth is reported to be rapid. Dorsal spines (total): 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 21 - 23; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 22 - 24; Vertebrae: 34. The anterior extremity has a very short bulbous projection with one to three anterolateral lobate or recurved projections.

Dioecious, external fertilization, oviparous, non-guarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Breeds in late summer to rainy season.
