Size: 16 cm.

Color: Yellowish, head and thoracal part dark or light reddish, a still darker triangular blotch from origin of dorsal to base of pectorals, continued through eye to dorsal surface of snout, fins yellowish, paired fins and caudal often with a blue hue, posterior angel of soft anal with a round black spot, smaller than eye. Sometimes dark brown instead of yellow.

Height 1.2-1.5, head 2.2-2.3 in length. Snout more or less than twice in head, increasing in length with age. Eye 5.25 to about 6 in head. Rostro-dorsal outline deeply concave, strongly ascending to dorsal fin. Preorbital and preoperculum denticulate. Dorsal spines rapidly increasing in height, the two anterior short, the fourth, fifth and sixth highest, rayed dorsal rounded, much shorter than spinous part, decreasing in height posteriorly. Anal with three strong spines , the third usually somewhat longer than the second, rayed part obtusely rounded, higher than rayed dorsal. Pectorals falcate, about twice longer than head without snout. Ventrals acute, much shorter than pectorals, with the spine about equal to head without snout, the first ray prolonged. Caudal slightly concave, its upper part somewhat longer, caudal peduncle 13 to 14 times in length. for other characters see those of genus.

Feeds mainly on whole organisms such as small crustaceans.

Oviparous, monogamous and forms pairs during breeding.
