Description
Size: Max length 500 cm TL (male/unsexed); 500 cm TL (female); common length 290 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Max. weight reported: 820 kg
Color: Dorsal surface of body dark purple, ventral surface dark brownish and the body completely with blackish tinge.
Head generally slightly more than 4 in total length. Snout 1.5 in head. Upper jaw more than twice length of lower jaw. Anterior lobe of first dorsal low, less than depth of body. Hind rays of first dorsal fin low. Pectoral fin not rigid and easily folding back against the side. Lateral line complicated, forming hexagonal branchings anteriorly; not easily discernible in adults. Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: III, 37-44; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: 7; number of spines and rays in the first anal fin: II, 14; number of spines and rays in the second anal fin: 7; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 2.
Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Subripe ova are opaque, white to yellow, and 0.3 to 0.5 mm in diameter. Transparent spherical eggs flowing out of a ripe ovary measured 1 mm in diameter.
