Size: 55-243 mm

Color: Light brownish to lighter, upper part of head darker; lower part of head slightly pinkish, three narrow dark streaks from eye to upper jaw, a dark blotch on upper edge of opercle, dark blotches in interorbital space and dorsolateral to eye, indistinct dark blotch between lateral line and middle of pectoral and traces of indistinct vertical bands on upper sides and a few irregular dark spots on sides of body. Fins pale, clouded with dark; membranes between first three ventral rays slightly dark.

Head 2.7-2.9 in standard length, 3.5-3.7 in total length. Depth of body 3.0-3.2 in standard length, 3.8-4.0 in total length. Eye diameter 4.6-5.0 in head, 2.3-2.5 in snout and 1.2-1.3 in evenly convex interorbital space. Area over nasal openings slightly enlarged. Hind nostril somewhat nearer to tip of snout than to hind margin of head. Maxillary reaching almost to vertical through anterior nostril. Teeth moderate, lateral teeth in jaws conical. Pectoral fin equaling length of snout and 2/3 eye diameter; ventral fin shorter than pectoral. Third dorsal fin spine longest. Third anal fin spine slender and longer than the second.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: X, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 48; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 4 ½ +1+15; gill raker count: 5+5.
